This project examines how the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s shaped the self-esteem of (male) homosexual minorities in the Netherlands.
Distorted Transmission

Recent literature on “minority stress” shows high (and rising) levels of mental health problems and suicide attempts in the LGBTQ+ community, despite improved social conditions. Through archival research and interviews with HIV/AIDS survivors, this project will explore how the collective experience of HIV/AIDS has affected the self-esteem of gay men from the 1980s to the present. The research will act as an exploratory step toward submitting an NWO Open Competition proposal.
